The Formula 1 World Championship will return to Portugal on October 25, 24 years after the last time in 1996, now at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão.
The Grand Prix of Portugal will be played between 23 and 25 October, with the presence of a public on the stands expected, Ni Amorim, president of the Portuguese Federation of Motoring and Karting (FPAK) told Lusa. Although this is still an aspect conditioned by the evolution of the covid-19 pandemic, for now the official website of the race track is offering a first package of 5,000 tickets, with prices ranging from 85 to 650 euros.
Moreover, the Grand Prix will have a significant influence on the country's finances. Economist Paulo Reis Mourão estimates that the impact of a Formula 1 grand prix in Portugal could reach 130 million euros, between direct and indirect gains. Author of the book "The Economics of Motorsports: The Case of Formula One", in which he presents a study on the economy around F1 since its beginning in 1950, Paulo Reis Mourão said, in statements to the agency Lusa, that the impact direct economic growth without an audience can be around 100 million euros.
The Portuguese Grand Prix will take place between the 23rd and 25th of October, with the presence of a public on the stands expected, said the president of the Portuguese Federation of Motorsport and Karting (FPAK), Ni Amorim.
Paulo Pinheiro, Administrator of the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA), said that the feeling is of accomplishment: “It is the culmination of a lot of work, a team effort, now awarded with Formula 1 in Portugal”.
For Paulo Pinheiro “it's just the kick-off. We have to make sure that everything goes well to make the race a memorable event and make it even stronger in the future ”.
Regarding the possibility of having an audience at the Portuguese GP, the head of the AIA said that “from the first moment we intend for the race to have an audience, working in this direction with the health organizations. We did a detailed job, which took time, with a lot of people involved. If everyone respects the rules, we are able to receive the public safely ”.
The last time that Formula 1 passed through Portugal was in 1996, in Estoril.
Canadian Jacques Villeneuve (Williams) was the last winner of the race, leaving his teammate, Briton Damon Hill, in second place. German Michael Schumacher in Benetton completed the podium but would lose the title that year to Hill.
